The Meaning of Metaphysical
It is common to refer to metaphysical when discussing spirituality or new age concepts. Where does the word come from and how is it used?
Metaphysics began as a philosophical concept and in a form that explored the nature of reality. Meta is Greek for "after" so the word means after physical or beyond the physical. It is in opposition to the modern idea of science–something provable by experimentation and observation–and refers to things outside of the realm that can be proved by physical evidence.
In current usage, metaphysics is widely used to refer to "subjects that are beyond the physical world." This might include books on spirits, faith healing, crystal power, Eastern philosophies, clairvoyance, astral projection, the akashic plane, reincarnation, Atlantis, and more.
